(In Case you Missed it!): Moving from Harm to Healing – A Practical and Relational Lens on Harm and Conflict

Just Outcomes was pleased to work with the REDI (Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) Office of the Faculty of Medicine, UBC to share a presentation on “Moving from Harm to Healing (part II): A Practical and Relational Lens on Harm and Conflict”, which is now live.

This webinar was attended by almost 200 people, 5 of which formed a “studio audience” to engage with Q&A. This opportunity to share our work was interesting to us, especially because of the overt connection to both healthcare providers and workplace conflict. Acknowledging that Indigenous peoples’ traditions and legal systems have been rooted in relationship and community since time immemorial, Western notions of “restorative justice” seem to move in waves. In the 1980s and early 1990s, restorative justice efforts were largely focused on the criminal legal system. By the late 1990s (until today), schools became very interested in RJ’s application in the education sector, making way for “Restorative Practices”, “Restorative Discipline” and other similar names. Then came many other waves of interest in (and sometimes skeptisim about) restorative justice from sectors including victim services, neighbourhoods, environmental regulatory organizations and higher educational institutions.

In the last decade or so, this restorative wave has begun to reach workplaces, and perhaps even more recently, the healthcare sector. Accordingly, we were eager to share our learnings around cultivating a restorative approach in the workplace with the Faculty of Medicine’s REDI office. We noticed the shared values of a focus on care, upholding relationships, equity, and doing repair sensitively when harm does occur. This webinar is full of little gems—have a look and let us know if you see parallels for your own workplace!
