A Restorative Approach within the Healthcare Setting
A progressive healthcare clinic with approximately 20 practitioners was interested in providing some proactive training for staff to address common communication issues and disputes with clients. A restorative approach often resonates strongly for healthcare professionals and those they serve, as its principles are consistent with a holistic focus on wellness.
Just Outcomes was invited to provide a 90-minute session during a weekly professional development meeting, with some practitioners joining virtually. The topic was both theoretical (e.g. “what a restorative approach means and why it matters”) and practical (e.g. “a few tools you can use right away with your clients”).
The training for the team was dynamic and interactive, using relevant examples that were gleaned in advance. The team was eager to share their current experiences and challenges, and ample time was made for trouble-shooting as a group. We devoted time for some voluntary “role play” exercises with the trainer (for those who wanted to try new skills), along with opportunities for reflection on areas of alignment between a restorative approach aligns with current practice, and how these principles and practices could assist with further growth.
Our feedback survey indicated strong satisfaction with the training and widespread agreement that “the training has provided valuable information for me at my workplace and in serving clients”. Participants reported appreciating the practical examples and useful strategies that could be used immediately with those they serve. We look forward to continued work with this healthcare clinic!
